What is headlight lens restoration?

Modern headlights are made of polycarbonate, a lightweight, impact-resistant material far less fragile than glass. The downside is its sensitivity to UV: as the Mediterranean sun attacks the protective coating applied at the factory, the polycarbonate oxidises, yellows and gradually loses its clarity. The beam becomes diffuse, its reach shortens, and night-time safety quietly decreases without the driver really noticing. Restoration consists of mechanically removing the oxidised layer, evening out the surface by polishing, then re-forming a new UV barrier. The process is non-invasive, restores up to 80 % of the original light beam and avoids the full replacement of the headlight unit, which is usually far more expensive and far less environmentally friendly.

Observed benefits

Beyond the obvious aesthetic gain, headlight restoration is first and foremost a road-safety matter. An oxidised lens can lose more than half of its useful beam without the driver being aware: the degradation is slow, the eye adapts, and it is often a passenger or a vehicle inspection that finally reveals the problem. Restoration brings back up to 80 % of the original beam, which immediately changes night-time perception, particularly on country roads. Economically, the gain is massive: €49 of restoration versus €200 to €800 for a new headlight, not counting the labour and the wait for the part. Environmentally, restoration avoids the production and transport of a brand-new polycarbonate unit, whose manufacturing is energy-intensive and whose recycling is difficult.

When should restoration be considered?

Restoration is ideal for yellowed or milky headlights, lenses with surface micro-cracks, before a vehicle inspection to avoid a fail on the lighting criterion, or before resale to visually re-value the vehicle. On a car older than eight years that has never been treated, the before-and-after effect is usually spectacular. For vehicles permanently exposed by the sea or in full sun, a preventive restoration every three to five years keeps the lenses sharp continuously.

   Preparation and masking

   Systematic masking around the headlight with suitable tape: paintwork, rubber seals, body trim adjacent to the lens. No product ever touches the unrelated areas.

   Progressive sanding (P800 → P3000)

   Four successive grits (P800, P1500, P2500 then P3000) to remove the oxidised layer and re-even the polycarbonate surface. Sanding is done with water to limit heating and protect the material.

   Polishing with fine abrasive paste

   Mechanical polishing with a fine abrasive paste to restore the clarity of the sanded polycarbonate. The light beam is immediately sharper.

   UV-protective varnish

   Application of a UV-protective varnish that re-forms the barrier against the sun. The varnish is what makes the restoration last: without it, the restoration would only last a few months. 1-year Bioclean warranty.

Limits of the process

Restoration is effective on surface oxidation, which covers more than 95 % of cases. It does not address internal defects: condensation inside the unit (failed seal), internal cracks in the polycarbonate, burn marks on the reflector from a faulty bulb, accidental oil or fuel splash.
